The Adair County Sheriff Jail holds the distinction of being the largest correctional facility in Adair County, situated on a spacious 8-acre property in the bustling city of Kirksville. Constructed in 1955, this facility is located at 215 North Franklin Street, Kirksville, MO, 63501.

With a capacity to accommodate 60 individuals, the jail primarily houses individuals awaiting trial. In addition to its primary role as a correctional facility, the Adair County Sheriff Jail is committed to providing comprehensive reintegration programs specifically tailored for male inmates.


In terms of security, the facility adheres to minimum security standards and is centrally located in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. The dedicated team of 47 staff members ensures the smooth operation and supervision of the facility.

On a monthly basis, the Adair County Sheriff Jail sees an average of 237 bookings, reflecting the dynamic nature of the facility. Furthermore, the jail actively engages more than 30 inmates in various work assignments within its premises, including kitchen duties, laundry services, and other essential tasks.

Guidelines For Visitation

Inmates incarcerated at the Adair County Sheriff Jail have the privilege of participating in two 45-minute video visits on-site each week. To ensure a smooth process, it is necessary to schedule these visits in advance within the designated time frame of 8:15am to 4pm, from Tuesday to Sunday.


It is important to note that these visits may be subject to limitations or restrictions if either the inmate or their visitor fails to adhere to the established rules and regulations in place. Compliance with these guidelines is essential to maintain a conducive and secure environment within the facility.

Delivering A Mail/Package

Friends and loved ones of the inmates have multiple avenues to deposit money into their commissary accounts. These include sending money orders, checks, or utilizing a service such as gong. Additionally, they can personally deposit the funds at the facility to ensure a timely and secure transaction.


Telephone Access For Inmates

Inmates at the Adair County Sheriff Jail are granted phone privileges from 7 AM to 7:30 PM. The facility permits collect calls, with each call being limited to a maximum duration of 30 minutes during regular hours and 10 minutes during peak hours. This system ensures fair and equitable access to phone services for all inmates within the specified time frames.

Overview of Adair County

Adair County, situated in the northeastern part of Missouri, is a county with a population of 25,314 as per the 2020 census. However, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Estimates as of July 1, 2021, the county’s population slightly decreased by 0.5% to 25,185. The county seat of Adair County is Kirksville. It was officially established on January 29, 1841, and was primarily settled by immigrants from Adair County in Kentucky, which inspired its name.


The settlement of Adair County, Missouri commenced in 1828, making it the first permanent settlement in the area. Many of the early settlers hailed from the Adair County in Kentucky, which served as the namesake for the Missouri county. The Kentucky county, in turn, was named after John Adair, an esteemed Governor of Kentucky. The establishment of Adair County, Missouri took place 25 years after the Louisiana Purchase, seven years after Missouri gained statehood, and four years subsequent to the Sac and Fox Native American tribes relinquishing their claims to the land. The initial settlement was known as “Cabins of White Folks” or simply “The Cabins,” located approximately six miles (9.7 km) west of present-day Kirksville along the Chariton River.
