Allegany County is situated in the northwestern region of the state of Maryland, United States. According to the 2020 census, the county has a population of 68,106 residents. Its county seat is Cumberland. The name “Allegany” is believed to have originated from a local Lenape word, welhik hane or oolikhanna, which conveys the meaning of “best flowing river of the hills” or “beautiful stream.” Several counties and a river in the Appalachian region of the United States share similar names, such as Allegany, Allegheny, or Alleghany.
Allegany County is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area and falls within the Western Maryland “panhandle.”
The western portion of Maryland, including the present-day Allegany County, was initially a part of Prince George’s County when Maryland was established in 1696. Over time, this county was divided multiple times to create new counties. In 1748, Frederick County was carved out of Prince George’s County, followed by the formation of Montgomery and Washington counties from Frederick County in 1776.
Allegany County was established in 1789 through the division of Washington County. It held the distinction of being the westernmost county in Maryland until 1872 when Garrett County was created, becoming the new westernmost county. Before 1789, the area comprising present-day Garrett and Allegany Counties in Maryland was claimed by the Virginia Commonwealth. Records indicate that Hampshire County, which was formed in 1758 by Virginia, initially included Garrett and Allegany Counties, as well as parts of present-day West Virginia counties such as Hardy, Grant, Mineral, and Morgan.
