To visit an inmate at the Ascension Parish Jail, visitors must adhere to the following rules and regulations:

A valid State driver’s license or picture ID with the correct address is required.
When visiting from out of state, a valid out-of-state picture ID with the correct address must also be presented upon arrival.
Students under the age of 17 may use their school ID or other picture ID.
Electronic devices, such as cell phones and tablets, are not allowed in the Main Lobby or Visitation areas.
Children should not be left unattended in the lobby or vehicle unless supervised by an individual aged 17 or older, possessing a valid state-issued ID or driver’s license.

Dress Code:

Visitors must be appropriately dressed before checking in for the visit. Inappropriate clothing or accessories are not allowed.
Prohibited clothing includes see-through garments, halter tops, tops with spaghetti straps, shorts or similar short outfits, pants that do not cover the knees, skirts or dresses with slits above the knees, clothing with inappropriate language, swimsuits, hats or head coverings, sunglasses, watches, or valuable items.

Failure to comply with the visitation rules may result in visitors being banned from the facility or facing criminal prosecution.

Process for Releasing Inmates from Jail

When individuals seek to secure the release of a friend or family member from the Ascension Parish Jail, they are required to post a bond with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office through the 23rd Judicial Court system. Currently, the jail accepts three types of bonds: Property, Surety, and Cash. These bonds serve as a guarantee that the individual being released will fulfill their obligations and comply with the court’s orders. Each type of bond has its own specific requirements and procedures that must be followed.

Steps for Posting an Appearance Bond:

Obtain an assessment certificate for your land from the Assessor’s Office.
Visit the Sheriff’s Office to determine the bond amount.
Purchase a conveyance certificate from the Clerk of Court for $20.00 (cash or debit/credit card only).
Obtain a mortgage certificate from the Clerk of Court for $20.00 for the first name, with an additional $10.00 for each additional name (cash or debit/credit card only).
Return to the Sheriff’s Office to have the bond prepared, with a fee of $30.00 (cash only).
Have the bond approved and signed by a 23rd Judicial District Court Judge.
Record the bond in the Clerk of Court’s Office, with a fee of $105 per Appearance Bond (cash or debit/credit card only).
Bring all the necessary paperwork to the jail where the person is being held.

Note: All fees paid to the Ascension Clerk of Court are non-refundable. The fees mentioned in steps 3, 4, and 7 cover name and property searches, certificate processing, and bond recordation. Once these steps are completed, the fees cannot be refunded.

Steps for Posting a Surety Bond:

Contact a state-approved bonding agency operating in Ascension Parish. You can find them in the phone book yellow pages or online under “Bail Bonds.”
The bonding agent will issue an insurance policy for the bond amount. They will guide you through the process, as bonding agents typically charge a fee of approximately 12% of the bond amount.

Steps for Posting a Cash Bond:

Pay the total bond amount in cash or certified funds (money order or cashier’s check).
The deposited funds will be returned to you when the arrested person has completed their court proceedings. In some cases, a form can be signed, and any court fines due will be deducted from the deposited funds.

Overview of Ascension County

Ascension Parish, also known as Paroisse de l’Ascension in French, is a parish situated in the state of Louisiana, USA. With a population of 126,500 according to the 2020 census, it serves as a home to its parish seat, Donaldsonville. The establishment of Ascension Parish dates back to 1807. It is encompassed within the Baton Rouge metropolitan statistical area and is one of the 22 parishes that comprise Acadiana, the cultural heartland of the Cajun people.

The distinctive Cajun culture is evident throughout Ascension Parish, as reflected in the prevalence of the French and Cajun French languages spoken by its residents. The parish embraces its heritage by hosting various lively festivals, including the Boucherie Festival, Lagniappe Music and Seafood Festival, Crawfish Festival, and the renowned Jambalaya Festival. Gonzales, the largest city within Ascension Parish, proudly claims the title of the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.”

Theearly European settlers of Ascension and Gonzales predominantly descended from French and Spanish ancestry. They coexisted with the Houma Indians who inhabited the area. Governor Luis de Unzaga ‘le Conciliateur’ played a significant role in promoting European settlement in the region during his tenure from 1769 to 1777. French Acadians and Malaga settlers were encouraged to establish new communities, such as the Unzaga Post in 1771, Saint Gabriel Parish in 1773, and Fort Manchac in 1776. The Ascension people settled at the confluence of these European settlements.

Ascension Parish faced a significant challenge during the 2016 Louisiana Floods, with approximately one-third of its homes being affected. The Galvez-St. Amant area witnessed the most severe impact, with around 15,000 homes and businesses being flooded. In the aftermath of the disaster, then-presidential candidate Donald J. Trump visited St. Amant to assess the situation and offer support.
