According to the 2020 census, the parish has a population of 21,039. Napoleonville serves as its parish seat. Assumption Parish was originally established in 1807 as one of the original parishes of the Territory of Orleans.
Being one of the twenty-two parishes of Acadiana, Assumption Parish is renowned for its production of sugar cane. In fact, it holds the distinction of producing the highest amount of sugar among all the parishes in Louisiana when considering its land area.
