Atchison County, situated in the northwestern part of Missouri, is the state’s northwesternmost county. As of the 2020 census, the county had a population of 5,305 people. Rock Port serves as the county seat. Originally known as Allen County, it was separated from Holt County in 1843. The county was officially established on February 14, 1845, and named in honor of David Rice Atchison, a prominent U.S. Senator from Missouri.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Atchison County spans a total area of 550 square miles (1,400 km2), with 547 square miles (1,420 km2) of land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) of water, accounting for approximately 0.5% of the total area. The county’s western boundary is predominantly formed by the Missouri River and Nebraska. A flood in 1867 caused a realignment of a river bend north of Watson. This alteration led to a dispute between Nebraska and Missouri over the ownership of the approximately 5,000-acre McKissick Island, which extends nearly two miles into Atchison County. In 1904, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Nebraska, declaring the land as belonging to the state. Access to the island by road from Nebraska requires crossing the Missouri River and traversing through Missouri.
