Caroline County Jail


Caroline County Department of Corrections, located in Denton, Caroline County, Maryland, is a minimum-security Adult facility. Operating since 1984, this facility has a capacity of 114 beds and handles approximately 521 bookings each year. It serves as the correctional institution for all of Caroline County under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Sheriff’s Office.


The facility takes pride in its comprehensive services, including a medical unit staffed by a doctor and nurse. Inmates at this Adult facility receive regular counseling sessions to address their psychological needs and help them cope with any challenges they may face. Additionally, eligible inmates can apply for an appeal process, which is determined based on factors such as additional charges and their behavior during their time of incarceration. The Caroline County Department of Corrections aims to provide a secure environment while offering necessary support and opportunities for rehabilitation.

  • Last names “H” through “Z” – Sunday: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

  • All names – Saturday and Sunday: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.


Visitation Rules Visitors are expected to follow the following rules:

  • Personal items such as handbags, cell phones, pagers, umbrellas, cameras, cigarettes, lighters, etc., are not allowed in the visiting area.
  • A visitor may not visit the same inmate more than once per day.
  • Visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Each visit allows a maximum of two children and two adults, or three children and one adult.
  • Loitering, profanity, and/or disruptive behavior are not permitted in the visiting area. Eating and drinking are also prohibited.
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the lobby, restrooms, and anywhere on the jail grounds.
  • Handbags are not permitted in the visiting area.
  • Physical contact between inmates and visitors is prohibited.
  • Visitors caught smuggling or attempting to smuggle contraband into the facility will face legal prosecution.


Dress Code Visitors must comply with the following dress code or they will be denied admittance:

  • Attire must be appropriate for an environment where children may be present.
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must reach the knee.
  • Slits in skirts or dresses may not exceed the knee.
  • See-through or sheer clothing is not allowed.
  • Spandex or form-fitting clothing is not permitted.
  • Shoulders, back, midriff, and excessive cleavage/bust must be covered.
  • Proper footwear and undergarments must be worn.
  • Clothing displaying profanity, obscene images, or promoting drugs, alcohol, violence, or gangs is strictly prohibited.

Mailing a Package/Letter

Mailing:

  • Inmates have the privilege to send and receive mail.
  • Senders must include a return address on the envelope to ensure delivery to the intended recipient.

Publications:

  • Inmates are allowed to receive publications, but they must be mailed directly from the publishers.
  • Publications include books, magazines, and newspapers.


Care Packages:

  • Care packages, which may include clothing, snacks, and seasonal items, must be obtained from approved third-party vendors.

Inmate Commissary

To provide funds for an inmate’s commissary account at Caroline County Department of Corrections in Maryland, the following approved methods of deposit are available:


  1. Onsite Deposits: You can make deposits in person at the kiosk located in the lobby of the Caroline County Department of Corrections. Cash, debit cards, and credit cards are accepted for these transactions.
  2. Online Deposits: The facility utilizes the JPay online payment system to receive deposits. This allows you to conveniently add funds to an inmate’s commissary account through an online platform.
  3. Money Orders: Money orders can be sent via the United States Postal Service, Western Union, or a reputable bank. Ensure that the money order is made payable to the inmate and includes their full name and identification number.
  4. Phone Deposits: Deposits can also be made over the phone using debit cards and credit cards. This option provides a convenient way to add funds to an inmate’s commissary account.

Telephone Access for Inmates

At Caroline County Department of Corrections in Maryland, inmates are allowed to make phone calls to a pre-approved call list, primarily consisting of friends and family members. There are two options for making calls: direct calls and collect calls.


  1. Direct Calls: Inmates can create an account with a third-party call services provider and fund it accordingly. This allows them to make calls using the available funds in their account. It is important for inmates to manage their account balance to ensure uninterrupted communication.
  2. Collect Calls: Alternatively, inmates can make collect calls, where the recipient of the call incurs the cost. In this arrangement, the person receiving the call will be responsible for paying the charges associated with the call.


Caroline County Sheriff Department

The Caroline County Department of Corrections oversees the County Detention Center, which is situated at 101 Gay Street in Denton, Maryland. This facility holds historical significance as it is located on the picturesque banks of the Choptank River. Additionally, it serves as the headquarters for the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office. Operating as a secure correctional facility, the Detention Center accommodates inmates for a duration of up to 18 months. However, individuals serving longer sentences are typically transferred to a State prison facility.

Overview of Caroline County

Caroline County, located in the rural Eastern Shore region of Maryland, is a scenic area with a population of 33,293 according to the 2020 census. Denton serves as the county seat, overseeing the administrative functions of the area. The county shares borders with Queen Anne’s County to the north, Talbot County to the west, Dorchester County to the south, and Kent County and Sussex County in Delaware to the east and southeast, respectively.


Caroline County was established in 1773 through legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly. It was created from portions of Dorchester and Queen Anne’s counties. The county derives its name from Lady Caroline Eden, the wife of Robert Eden, who was the final colonial governor of Maryland. The initial board of commissioners, consisting of Charles Dickinson, Benson Stainton, Thomas White, William Haskins, Richard Mason, Joshua Clark, and Nathaniel Potter, purchased 4 acres of land at Pig Point (now Denton) to construct a courthouse and jail.


During the early years, court sessions were held at Melvill’s Warehouse until the completion of the designated buildings. In 1777, the court was briefly moved to Bridgetown (now Greensboro) but later returned to Melvill’s for convenience. After disagreements regarding the permanent county seat location, a compromise was reached in 1785, leading to the purchase of 2 acres of land at Melvill’s Landing for the courthouse and jail. The county court and its facilities were eventually relocated to Pig Point in 1790, where the Caroline County Courthouse was completed in 1797. The county boasts several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a portion of the area is being developed by the National Park Service as part of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument, dedicated to interpreting the Underground Railroad in the southern half of Caroline County.
