Dukes County is a county located in the state of Massachusetts, USA. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 20,600, making it the second-least populous county in Massachusetts. The county seat is Edgartown. Dukes County encompasses the Vineyard Haven, MA Micropolitan Statistical Area. It consists of several islands, including Martha’s Vineyard, Chappaquiddick Island, the Elizabeth Islands (including Cuttyhunk), Nomans Land, and other associated islets.
The original inhabitants of the islands were the Wampanoag people, who had established multiple villages in the area. The English monarchy granted political jurisdiction over these lands to two different British nobles. In 1641, Thomas Mayhew, a settler from the Massachusetts Bay Company, purchased the rights to these lands from the natives. Mayhew established a colony and acquired land ownership rights while respecting the existing native governments. In 1665, Mayhew’s lands became part of a grant to James, Duke of York (later King James II). A settlement was reached in 1671, allowing Mayhew to maintain authority over his territory while placing it under the jurisdiction of the Province of New York.
On November 1, 1683, Dukes County was established as Dukes County, New York, encompassing all of Mayhew’s lands, including Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and the Elizabeth Islands. However, on October 7, 1691, the county was transferred to Massachusetts, and Nantucket Island became a separate county known as Nantucket County, Massachusetts. The county was formally incorporated in 1695 under the name “Dukes County,” despite the redundant use of the word “county” in its formal name as “County of Dukes County.”
