Sending a Mail/Package

Sending Inmate Money

Overview of Hancock County

Hancock County, situated in the state of Maine, is a county known for its rich history and scenic landscapes. According to the 2020 census, the county had a population of 55,478 residents. The county seat is located in Ellsworth. It was officially incorporated on June 25, 1789, and named in honor of John Hancock, the first governor of Massachusetts.


During the 2000 census, Hancock County had a population of 51,791 individuals, residing in 21,864 households and belonging to 14,233 families. The population density was estimated at 33 people per square mile (13 people per square kilometer). The county boasted 33,945 housing units with an average density of 21 per square mile (8.1 per square kilometer). In terms of racial composition, 97.61% of the population identified as White, 0.25% as Black or African American, 0.37% as Native American, 0.38% as Asian, 0.03% as Pacific Islander, 0.20% as belonging to other races, and 1.15% as having two or more races. Additionally, 0.65% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.


The primary languages spoken in Hancock County were English (96.8%), French (1.5%), and Spanish (1.0%). Within the county, there were diverse households, with 28.20% of them having children under the age of 18. Around 53.50% of households consisted of married couples living together, while 8.10% were led by a female householder with no husband present. Non-family households accounted for 34.90% of the total. Individual households made up 27.90% of the county’s households, and 11.60% of households had a resident who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31, and the average family size was 2.81.
